Pirehill First School: Sport into Schools Case Study

Pirehill has been turning unwanted textiles into sports equipment with Wastebuster’s London 2012 Inspire Project, Sport into Schools. On the 30th March Pirehill had a collection day and were lucky enough to have two athletes join them; Jamell Anderson, Team GB basketball player and Emma Wilkins, Team GB freestyle swimmer. It was a great day with lots of textiles being collected, an interactive 'recycling relay' Wastebuster assembly (which can be downloaded from the 'Get Started' area) and sports activities throughout the day.

To carry out a large project in the Eco-Schools topics of Litter and Waste for their Green Flag award, the Oaks Primary decided to rise to the Wastebuster Bust Your Bin Challenge.

To get an idea of what St Martin’s waste situation currently was, the Premises Committee set about the Wastebuster Bust Your Bin Challenge. By carrying out a the challenge, they are able to achieve their Eco-Schools Silver Flag award, and carry on their journey to get a Green Flag award and become a great Green school.

Hampton Hill Junior School

Children from Hampton Hill Junior School have been turning unwanted textiles into sports equipment, as part of Wastebuster’s London 2012 Inspire Project; Sport into Schools. The project collects unwanted textiles from schools, awards ‘Sports Points’ relative to tonnage, and exchanges them for new school sports equipment. William Jerman of Hampton Hill Junior School said: "We have been delighted to be part of this exciting and innovative project. It has really engaged the children and successfully links together sport, recycling and sustainability with the 2012 London Olympics...a truly winning combination".

St Edmunds Catholic Primary School

As they worked with Wastebuster towards their Eco-Schools Green flag award, the children at St Edmunds Catholic Primary School learnt how products are recycled, how to make positive changes both locally and globally, how to debate environmental issues effectively and why composting food waste is such a great thing to do. Their head teacher Mrs Bullen said, “To be asked to be part of this venture was a fantastic opportunity for the children. It enabled us to bring the eco schools agenda right into the classroom and to become part of the curriculum in a meaningful and purposeful way for the children”

Auriol Primary School had an exciting day watching the Wastebuster feature film and creating their own stop-frame animation on recycling, as they worked towards their Silver Eco-Schools award.

Pilgrims Way Primary School

Children at Pilgrims Way Primary school took part in the Wastebuster Challenge and conducted an audit of their school lunches, as they worked towards their Bronze Flag award. This gave them an opportunity to assess their environmental performance and put together an action plan that they could share with the whole school community.
