What is the Wastebuster education programme?

 The Wastebuster education programme is a comprehensive, online, multimedia waste education programme that provides support for teachers to integrate waste education into the curriculum and help children plan, implement, evaluate and monitor progress towards creating sustainable schools, homes and communities.

Wastebuster has developed a national waste education programme with simple, off-the-shelf schemes of work, supporting resources and step-by-step guides to support teachers working towards waste reduction in their school and all levels of Eco-Schools accreditation.

Membership to the Wastebuster programme includes;

Can the Wastebuster resources help my school work towards Eco-Schools accreditation?

 Yes. The programme is designed to provide simple, off-the-shelf schemes of work to support teachers working towards all levels of Eco-Schools accreditation with child-led activities, supporting resources and step-by-step guides.

Guidance is provided for schools working towards Bronze, Silver and Green flag Eco-Schools accreditations.

Can Wastebuster help my school recycle waste?

 Wastebuster is a fully integrated waste education programme designed to help schools reduce waste by providing teachers with films, lesson plans, online resources, assemblies, competitions and campaign resources on why and how waste can be reduced, reused and recycled in school, at home and in the local community.

The programme is designed to effectively engage the school community in waste reduction, reuse and recycling and promotes a whole school approach.

A Wastebuster textile recycling scheme is also available which can raise funds for participating schools. Please see the ‘Sport into Schools’ section for more information.

What link does the programme have with my local authority?

 Participating local authorities may offer local news and information to your school through the Wastebuster programme. Eco-Schools coordinators and waste officers in participating local authorities will be able to offer further support, guidance and ideas for waste minimisation work in your area.

Which topics do Wastebuster cover?

 Wastebuster specialise in waste minimisation. However, the programme will explore all 9 Eco-Schools topics, to comprehensively support schools work towards Eco-Schools accreditation including; Waste, Water, Energy, Biodiversity, Global Perspectives, Healthy Living, Litter, School Grounds and Transport.

Wastebuster will cover new topics in Waste and at least 2 other Eco-Schools topics every year.

What is the Wastebuster campaign toolkit?

Wastebuster has developed a selection of campaign materials including awareness posters, collection point posters, reward stickers and reward sheets to promote waste minimisation and recycling in participating schools. These can be found to print in the Teacher resources section here. Prior consent and approval must be sought from Wastebuster CIC for any representation of the brand in any materials under the Terms & Conditions that were agreed upon registration (viewable here).

Are all the Wastebuster resources online?

 Yes.

Do we receive any hard copy resources?

As an environmental education company, Wastebuster promote paperless lessons. We do provide hardcopy campaign packs for schools following registration including a set of posters. You will receive either a standard Wastebuster membership campaigns pack or a SiS campaigns pack, depending on your membership type.

All campaign materials can also be downloaded and printed from the toolkits section of the Wastebuster website.

Are Wastebuster resources environmentally friendly?

 Yes. All print materials are printed on 100% recycled paper with vegetable based inks whenever possible. All envelopes and packaging are also 100% recycled or reused where possible.

What support does Wastebuster offer Sustainability Coordinators?

 Wastebuster resources contain teacher’s notes explaining how they might support curriculum targets. The Eco-Schools guides provide ideas, suggestions and schemes for all levels of accreditation. Direct support and referrals can be provided by Wastebuster. An online training package is currently being developed including webinars, assemblies and guides to support sustainability coordinators.

Can community groups e.g. scouts, guides or community sports clubs register for Wastebuster and SiS membership?

 Yes.

How might our school/ community group use the Wastebuster programme?

 There are many ways to use the Wastebuster programme in your school or community group but here are just a few examples;

  • Show the Wastebuster ‘15 Minutes to Save the Earth’ film and carry out the interactive Wastebuster assembly to introduce the topics of waste reduction and recycling to your school/ community group.
  • Screen Wastebuster films on your campaign topics to inform, educate and inspire positive action.
  • Work through the KS1 and KS2 Wastebuster packs – use the lesson plans and accompanying resources.
  • Invite your School Council/ community group to run a school waste and recycling campaign by placing the Wastebuster posters in prominent places around your school/ community centre and screensavers on all PC’s.
  • Document any wastebusting activity in your school/ community group (e.g. activities diary with photographs) and upload it to your school/ community groups’ case study page.

Do we have a schools liaison officer? How do we contact them?

 Yes. The Wastebuster school liaison officer manages all questions related to the delivery of the programme. Simply email info@wastebuster.co.uk using your school’s name as the subject heading, your query and the school liaison officer will respond.

What support does the school liaison officer provide?

 Advice, guidance and referrals to support programme delivery not found in the service FAQ’s.

Who provides technical support? How do we contact them?

What is the Wastebuster of the Year award?

 This award is to recognise and reward Wastebuster recycling heroes. We know you are out there! Our wastebusting hero or heroes could be a pupil, a teacher, a class, community group, a waste officer, School Council or Eco-Council that you know.

If YOU know of any amazing Wastebuster’s out there, here is a chance to throw the spotlight from Wastebuster’s space shuttle onto their great work and give them the recognition they deserve!

If you would like to nominate an individual or group, please email Wastebuster why you feel they deserve to win Wastebuster of the Year (maximum 100 words). Please include the individual or groups name and contact details (if a pupil is only the school/teacher’s contact details are required). Photos are great too (if available).

The Wastebuster of the Year will win a certificate of achievement, a bumper pack of Wastebuster goodies, a visit from Busta and Pong and an opportunity to showcase their great work in a Wastebuster film!

The Wastebuster of the year is awarded annually with a deadline date of 1st June every year. Please email entries before the 1st June deadline to: info@wastebuster.co.uk with the subject ‘Wastebuster of the Year Award’. Or you can send entries to Wastebuster here with the ‘Reason for contacting us’ set to ‘Suggestions’. Winners will be nominated on the 15th June every year.

How do we register for Wastebuster membership?

  1. Wastebuster Membership

Select 'Wastebuster membership for individual schools or community groups'; complete, submit the registration form and pay via Pay Pal or BACs.

You will then be sent your username and password.

  1. Local Authority Wastebuster Membership

If your local authority is providing Wastebuster Membership for your school select 'Local authority membership for schools'; complete the registration form, enter the REGISTRATION CODE (provided by your local authority) and submit.

You will then be sent your username and password.

  1. Sport into Schools Membership

Simply select ‘Register for Sport into Schools Membership'. Complete the registration form and if you are located in England you will be sent an email containing your username and password.

What are Wastebuster Registration Codes?

 Wastebuster Registration Codes provide 12 months of free access to the Wastebuster programme and are emailed to schools or community groups directly from Wastebuster if their local authority is participating in the Wastebuster programme.

What do I do if I have lost my Wastebuster Registration Code?

 If you are from a participating local authority and have lost your Wastebuster Registration Code, simply email Wastebuster with the name of your school/community group and address here.

How do we renew Wastebuster membership?

 Wastebuster membership: can be renewed through the registration area. Members will also receive a renewal reminder email 2 weeks before their renewal date containing a quick link to the membership renewal section.

SIS membership: Members will receive a renewal reminder email 2 weeks before their renewal date containing a link to email our administration team (info@wastebuster.co.uk), simply email us with your membership details (name and email of participating school, community group or sports club) and we will renew your membership for you.

Local Authorities Subsidised Membership: Please contact your local authority directly to see if it is still possible.

Can community groups e.g. scouts, guides or community sports clubs register for SiS membership?

 Yes.

How do we cancel our Wastebuster membership?

 Wastebuster membership: Simply don’t renew your membership when prompted. Your membership will cancel automatically unless renewed within 12 months after the date of registration.

Do we still have access to the Wastebuster resources without membership?

 No. Schools are eligible to access the Wastebuster resources, SiS collections and funding, providing they have Wastebuster membership.

Which NEW Wastebuster resources will be available each year?

 New Key Stage 1 and 2 education packs will be made every year.

Each education pack contains a set of films, lesson plans and supporting interactive tools exploring current waste topics.

The 2010-11 topics are Waste, Litter and Global Perspectives and include the following subtopics;

KS1: The Waste Hierarchy, Paper Waste, Textiles Waste, Food Waste: Composting
Each KS1 pack contains 4x 4 minute films on waste topics.

KS2: Paper Waste, Textiles Waste, Food Waste: Composting/ Wormeries, Local and Global Waste issues
Each KS2 pack contains 4x 10 minute films on waste topics

Wastebuster films can be used as topic or activity introductions.

The following topics are to be covered from 2010-14. Sub topics in waste will be covered every year but new topics in sustainability will be covered to compliment and support schools working towards the 9 Eco-Schools topics:

  • 2011-12: Waste, Global Perspectives, and Healthy Living
  • 2012-13: Waste, Biodiversity, Water and Energy
  • 2013-14: Waste, Litter, School Grounds and Transport

This will provide an opportunity for effective cross departmental school communications in participating local authorities.

What is the Wastebuster Programme Evaluation?

 Wastebuster gives schools, pupils, waste officers, Eco-Schools officers, academics, artists, curriculum consultants and programme partners an opportunity to have their say about the programme annually. We will send out questionnaires, conduct interviews, receive calls and invite comments on our online form. We will consider all feedback carefully and adapt the programme to improve our service to you.
