Wastebuster Recycling Design and Technology Workshop with Hubcap Creatures

The children have seen some of Pong’s inventions in waste, now they can make some of their own!

Wastebuster have teamed up with Hubcap Creatures  to offer waste sculpture workshops, designed to encourage children to reconsider before they discard something which apparently has no purpose. The workshops have been devised by ‘Hubcap Creatures’ as a way of creating an energy and enthusiasm for making sculpture from waste materials.

Ptolemy Elrington, the man behind Hubcap Creatures, is a UK based artist and designer who creates incredible pieces of art from discarded objects.

The Wastebuster sculpture team provides workshops for young people of all abilities and levels. Every workshop is tailored to a group’s particular needs and enables them to express creative ideas on the environment through art and design.

The workshops are designed to link to curriculum targets in Art and Design, Design and Technology, ICT, PSHE and Citizenship for all Key Stages. Tailored projects exploring curriculum targets can be delivered in collaboration with teaching staff.

The workshops use a collaborative approach to sculpture - but still allow pupils to work individually on their own creations with a focus on the following areas:

  • Encouragement of pupils to value their imagination as something which is unique to the individual and which can provide a way in to their own creativity.
  • Exploration and investigation of familiar objects - re-seeing, questioning, challenging.
  • Exploration of materials; choosing appropriate materials for the appropriate task/outcome.
  • Practical craft - inventiveness and dexterity in using materials and tools.
  • Communication of ideas; original intention, end results, discussion relating to how the sculpture would develop- how things could be done differently, and an understanding of each other’s work.

Workshop Guidance

  • The Wastebuster sculpture workshops are for all ages and are available to schools, community and special needs groups. It is possible to book courses for schools, animation sessions, holiday workshops, creative days for groups, adult workshops or Inset days to engage in a fun team building experience.
  • The sculpture workshops are recommended for KS2 upwards.
  • All Wastebuster puppets and sets are made from recovered/ recycled materials provided by Wastebuster. Teacher liaison will determine whether it is suitable for pupils to bring certain waste materials from home, as this not only introduces a dialogue concerning recycling and reuse but also turns up an amazing assortment of raw materials. It also includes children's parents in the start of the process, and hopefully gets them into thinking about the re-cycling process too. A recommended materials list will be provided e.g. cardboard boxes and plastic bottles.
  • Actual examples of sculptures will be brought to the school. A selection of images on a memory stick can also be shown if the schools/ group have the facility to supply a slideshow. These images can be used to inspire pupils and stimulate discussion around design, materials and construction.
  • Preliminary sketches are required prior to development.
  • Costs include the materials and resources required, although the hosting school/ group should provide basic equipment such as paper, pencils, scissors, colouring pens, table covers and newspaper. See guidelines below.
  • Younger children (6 to 10 year olds) - School supplies - Pencils and paper. Sticky tape, glue, sellotape, paint, string scissors. Children supply - Old cardboard, plastic bottles, bottle tops, wrapping material, crisp packets, etc (all clean).
  • Older children (10 to 15 year olds) - School supplies - Pencils and paper. Sticky tape, glue, sellotape, paint, string, tools such as hacksaws, pliers, scissors, screwdrivers, drills, drill bits etc. Children supply - Old cardboard, plastic bottles, bottle tops, wrapping material, crisp packets, old cd players, vacuum cleaners, shoes, old scanners/printers etc.
  • Upper ages (15/16 year olds) - School supplies - Safe environment (welding specific) Protective clothing, welding masks, gloves, overalls, goggles etc. I supply welder, welding equipment including torch, wire, gas etc. Raw materials to be arranged with the school.
  • KS1 workshops have proven to be more effective when creating sculptures from smaller found objects that have been brought from home.
  • If there is an afternoon session with the same group, the whole process will begin again, working in small groups of five or six on a single, larger piece. This format provides an opportunity for pupils to improve their team working skills, including how to delegate tasks among themselves.
  • Older children are likely to want to work with more dynamic materials e.g. old electrical appliances, tin cans, shoes - which require a little more thought and preparation. The materials list will provide guidance.
  • The correct approach must be taken working with tools and safety gear. A guide will be provided to ensure all is carefully considered in the preparation and building process.
