Wastebuster

About the Project

The Sport into Schools London 2012 Inspire project  is designed to use the inspiration of the 2012 Games to encourage individuals to make sustainable life choices, divert textile waste from landfill, and increase access and participation in sport for children and young people.

The project is delivered by three UK Community Interest Companies, Wastebuster CIC, LMB Education CIC and Sports Traider CIC.

Wastebuster

Wastebuster are the lead delivery partner providing the platform, complementary education programme, project tools and resources to help participating schools, groups and clubs to make the most of participating in the project.

Wastebuster resources can be used to creatively explore waste in the curriculum and help demonstrate that although the school/ group/ club is at the heart of the process, the environmental, social and economic benefits of the project are world-wide.

Schools can also use Wastebuster to support work towards all levels of Eco-Schools accreditation (Bronze, Silver, Green and Green Ambassador flags).

LMB Education

LMB Education manages the project’s textile recycling process including the collections, sorting and redistribution. They provide Sports Points for every kg of textiles recycled, which can be exchanged for sports equipment through the Wastebuster Exchange Store.

LMB ensure the Sport into Schools textiles recycling process maximises potential social, economic and environmental benefits. LMB sort their textiles in the UK, unlike most textile recyclers, to provide UK jobs and reduce transportation costs. They then supply to Europe and developing countries to provide jobs, affordable clothing and economic stability on which the respective country can build on.

LMB have many years experience in the industry, and as such have specialist markets for damaged and worn clothing in addition to selling the clothing which can be reused.

Sports Traider

Sports Traider provide sports equipment to the project and use the proceeds generated from the sale of donated end of line sports equipment to fund coaching, access to facilities such as sports clubs and gyms - and even the transport required to get talented but disadvantaged and aspiring athletes to training.

Through used and discount sports kit shops, such as the flagship stores in Bedford, Luton and Leicester Sports Traider make specialist clothing and equipment affordable to youngsters for whom such items would be an inaccessible luxury. The charity stores also provide social hubs, reduce local landfill by collecting and redistributing unwanted sports equipment, and increase local job opportunities for ex-offenders during their rehabilitation back into the community.

Supporting Communities

Wastebuster, LMB Education and Sports Traider are all Community Interest Companies, constituted specifically to deliver community benefits through their work.

As a result, the Sport into Schools London 2012 Inspire project has the potential to bring considerable social, economic and environmental benefits to schools, sports clubs and their local communities.
