A step-by-step guide

1. Register to become a member of Sport into Schools:

You may then login to access the online Get Started guide, a wide range of teaching resources and your online account.

You can register here.

2. Book a collection and receive your collections pack:

Following registration, you can use your online collections calendar to book a collection date. Or, you can simply email: kerry@sportintoschools.org.

You will then receive a collections pack in the post, including everything you need to make your collection day as successful as possible, including;

Your campaign poster pack
Campaign introduction/ collection reminder flyers
Collection sacks (rolls of 40)
Giant waterproof outdoor collection sack (to store all sacks outdoors on your collection day).

We recommend you book your collection at least 1-month in advance to give you ample time to receive and use the collection pack campaign resources.

3. Introduce the campaign to your school/ group:

Textile recycling is a great way to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and unlock the potential value of waste.

Use the project resources to introduce the principles of sustainable development, get your whole school community involved and plan a special collection campaign to gather as many bags of unwanted textiles as possible;

You will find a template parents letter, press release and newsletter materials in the campaign materials area so you can let everybody know how they can get involved!
Use Wastebuster cross-curricular teaching resources to creatively explore waste in the curriculum and encourage waste reduction and recycling in your classroom and school.
Use London 2012 Get Set education resources to inform, educate and inspire your pupils to stay healthy and get active in new sports: http://getset.london2012.com/en/home
Support work towards all levels of Eco-Schools accreditation by using the Wastebuster Eco-Schools guides.
Place campaign posters (found in your collections pack) around your school to raise awareness of your collections.
Place your ‘Textiles Totaliser’ poster (found in your collections pack) in your assembly hall to keep a tally on your tonnage and share achievement in assemblies.

4. Hold a collection day:

We will arrange for your bags of textiles to be collected and weighed on your requested collection day. You can use the giant waterproof collection sack to store all the sacks outside on collection day, to save storage space.

We collect any clean, dry clothes including bed linen, towels and curtains, as well as trainers, boots, sandals and shoes if they are in pairs. Unfortunately, we cannot collect pillows, duvets, sleeping bags, slippers or single shoes.

5. Earn Sports Points:

Depending on how many kilograms you manage to collect, you will be awarded "Sports Points" in your online account.

1 tonne = 20,000 Sports Points
Every tonne after = 35,000 Sports Points

It is anticipated that each school in the scheme will collect an average of 1.5 tonnes p.a. (37,500 Sports Points) as part of the programme that can be exchanged for new, discounted sports equipment in the Exchange Store.

1.5 tonnes is the equivalent of any of the following;

26 x tennis rackets
6 x tennis nets
50 x footballs
7 x Skatch Velcro catch games
595 x sponge balls
400 tennis balls

Your collection tonnage and ‘Sports Points’ will be added to your online account by the 15th of the following month of your collection. For example, for any collection made in January, Sports Points will be awarded on the 15th February.

You may then add your tonnage to your Totaliser poster and celebrate with your school/ group!

6. Order sports equipment from the Exchange Store:

When logged in you can order new sports equipment from the wide selection available in the Exchange Store by following the on-screen instructions.

7. Be part of London 2012:

Through the scheme you can introduce new sports into your school, demonstrate eligibility for the Get Set network and get your pupils involved in the excitement of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Helpful service information

You can make your collections a regular event - schools/ groups may request as many textile sack collections as they wish. Termly collections (to coincide with the change of season) are proven to be particularly effective. Non-uniform days are a great way to bring a sense of occasion and excitement on collection days.
