WASTEBUSTER ECO-SCHOOLS

The Wastebuster project has been designed to fit into the DCSF’s Sustainable Schools strategy and the key priorities of Eco-Schools under three of the nine Eco-Schools themes: Waste, Litter and Global Perspectives. The programme can be used as an effective support and guide for schools working towards their Bronze, Silver or Green Flag award.

Children at Pilgrims Way Primary school took part in the Wastebuster Challenge and conducted an audit of their school lunches, as they worked towards their Bronze Flag award. This gave them an opportunity to assess their environmental performance and put together an action plan that they could share with the whole school community.

As they worked with Wastebuster towards their Eco-Schools Green flag award, the children at St Edmunds Catholic Primary School learnt how products are recycled, how to make positive changes both locally and globally, how to debate environmental issues effectively and why composting food waste is such a great thing to do.

Their head teacher Mrs Bullen said, “To be asked to be part of this venture was a fantastic opportunity for the children. It enabled us to bring the eco schools agenda right into the classroom and to become part of the curriculum in a meaningful and purposeful way for the children”

Wastebuster also fits into the DCSF’s Sustainable Schools strategy under three of the nine Eco-Schools themes: Waste, Litter and Global Perspectives.

The table below demonstrates how these themes address significant elements of the eight doorways to becoming a Sustainable School, and which questions of the ‘s3’ tool* are similarly linked:

Waste Minimisation Contributes to Purchasing & Waste
Inclusion & Participation
1.1–6.1, F5, F8
Litter Contributes to Purchasing & Waste
Inclusion & Participation
Local Well-Being
1.1–6.1, F5, F8, F9
Global Perspective Contributes to Global Dimension
Inclusion & Participation
1.1-6.1, F8, F10

* The ‘s3’ sustainable school self-evaluation tool, developed by the DCSF, is based on the Self-Evaluation Form (SEF) required for your school by Ofsted.

Schools on the Wastebuster programme will receive the full Wastebuster Eco-Schools Accreditation Guide for how to use the Wastebuster programme to work towards your Eco-Schools Bronze, Silver and Green Flag awards.
