Bourne Community College Student, Wins Climate Enterprise Award 2024

Emilia, a year 9 student at Bourne Community College, has been awarded the Climate Enterprise Award 2024 for her innovative project titled "School Sewing Projects."

Emilia's idea revolves around the simple, yet powerful idea of repurposing old and damaged clothes collected from students within the school community. Emilia then proposes the collected material is used in various school sewing projects conducted during workshops, after school clubs or lessons. Through these initiatives, Emilia aims not only to reduce textile waste but also to impart valuable life skills to her peers. The items could either be kept by the students or sold for school fundraisers.

Emilia's project will have a dual impact – addressing both environmental concerns and educational objectives. By diverting discarded clothing from the bin, Emilia's idea aligns with broader sustainability goals, contributing to the reduction of textile waste within the community. Furthermore, by hopefully integrating sewing activities into the school curriculum, we hope her project will foster a culture of hands-on learning and practical skill development among students.

Emilia's project serves as a shining example of how small actions can lead to significant change. Through collaborative efforts and dedication to sustainable practices, Bourne Community College and its students are paving the way for a greener, more resilient future. Other West Sussex schools will benefit from the format of the workshops that are created.

Congratulations to Emilia on her well-deserved win, and may her inspiring journey teach others the lifelong skill of sewing, to repair clothes and help towards a more sustainable tomorrow.
