Recycle It Right: The West Sussex Schools Challenge is back for 2025/26

Wastebuster and West Sussex County Council are once again inviting all primary schools across the county to take part in the Recycle It Right competition – a free, fun, and easy way to boost recycling knowledge in your school community, with the chance to win fantastic prizes.

How It Works

The challenge is simple: encourage as many of your pupils as possible to complete the short Recycle It Right quiz (Wastebuster Star) for your school. Each completed quiz counts as one point. The more quizzes your pupils complete, the higher your school will climb the leaderboard.

Prizes include:

  • A school trip to the Materials Recycling Facility at Ford
  • A celebration assembly hosted by West Sussex Wastebusters
  • A compost or hot bin for your school
  • A captain Busta puppet mascot
  • Award certificate for your school

All Year, Your Way

The competition runs throughout the school year, giving you plenty of flexibility to get involved when it best suits your school. You might choose to:

  • Launch the challenge with a whole-school assembly to encourage family participation during the holidays.
  • Run it alongside Earth Day (22 April), Global Recycling Day (18 March), or during Waste Week in March to link with other eco-activities.
  • Tie it into Eco Team/School Council projects or curriculum topics such as sustainability, science, or geography.
  • Use it as a fun home learning task to spark conversations with families about recycling at home.

Why Take Part?

The competition is designed to help schools educate their pupils and the broader community about how to recycle correctly – reducing contamination in household bins and supporting better recycling habits. The quiz only takes a few minutes and features engaging videos followed by multiple-choice questions, making it a great way to start discussions both in school and at home.

Get Started

To make it easy, Wastebuster provides everything you need, including an assembly presentation and template letters for parents.

The competition is open now and runs until the final deadline at midday on Friday 3rd July 2026 – so there’s plenty of time to get involved and make your school a recycling champion!
