West Sussex Primary Food Waste Eco Team Activity

This interactive eco-team activity empowers primary pupils to take the lead on improving food waste recycling within their school. Combining a structured campaign framework with an engaging worksheet, it supports pupils to move from understanding food waste to taking real, measurable action.

Through a series of guided stages, pupils investigate how food waste is currently managed in their school, identify key issues such as contamination or unclear signage, and design their own campaign to improve behaviour. Activities include auditing waste systems, planning communications, and delivering solutions such as posters, assemblies or awareness campaigns.

The accompanying worksheet reinforces learning and extends impact into the home. Pupils identify what can and cannot go in food waste bins, share their learning with family members, and take on the role of “Food Waste Champions” to influence behaviour beyond the classroom.

With a strong focus on pupil voice, teamwork and problem-solving, this resource supports meaningful environmental action while building confidence and leadership skills.
