West Sussex Secondary Food Waste Champions Activity

This student-led project empowers secondary pupils to take ownership of food waste recycling within their school by becoming “Food Waste Champions”. Working collaboratively, students investigate current waste systems, identify key issues such as contamination or unclear signage, and design and deliver a campaign to improve behaviour.

Structured across a series of stages, the activity guides students through real-world problem solving—from auditing current practice, to analysing issues, planning targeted interventions, and implementing their own campaigns. Outputs may include posters, assemblies, digital content or whole-school initiatives such as awareness weeks, with a strong focus on visible, measurable impact.

The project encourages students to apply knowledge from across the curriculum while developing leadership, communication and critical thinking skills. It also supports schools in strengthening their sustainability practices and contributing to Climate Action Plans, with opportunities to extend impact into the home and wider community.
