West Sussex Secondary Food Waste Enterprise and Art Activity

This creative, project-based activity challenges students to design effective communications that promote correct food waste recycling. Linking enterprise, art and environmental education, it supports students to apply creativity and strategic thinking to a real-world sustainability issue.

Students explore how communication influences behaviour, then define a target audience, key message and intended outcome before creating their own campaign materials. Outputs can include posters, signage, infographics, slogans or digital content, with a strong emphasis on clarity, visual impact and simple, memorable messaging.

The activity provides flexible delivery options, from a single lesson to an extended project or school-wide campaign, and includes opportunities to showcase student work within the school community. By positioning students as designers of real communications, it reinforces the importance of clear messaging in driving environmental action and reducing contamination in recycling systems.
