Secondary Food Waste Science and Geography Activity
Share item on social media
This enquiry-based activity uses food waste recycling as a real-world case study to explore key concepts across KS3 and KS4 science and geography. Students investigate how food waste is transformed into renewable energy and fertiliser through anaerobic digestion, linking scientific processes to environmental impact and sustainable resource management.
The resource provides flexible delivery options, from a single lesson to an extended project, and includes a structured student investigation covering the science of decomposition, energy transfer and the carbon cycle. A hands-on practical experiment demonstrates how microorganisms produce gas, modelling the process of biogas generation and reinforcing understanding through observation and discussion.
Students are encouraged to think critically about environmental impact by comparing waste disposal scenarios, exploring contamination issues, and estimating real-world outcomes such as energy generation from food waste. The activity also supports application of knowledge through data analysis, scientific explanation and communication tasks, with clear links to curriculum requirements.
